After 5 years cooking in such acclaimed restaurants as Green and Oliveto in the San Francisco Bay Area, Claire Smith returned to her native Houston, Texas to replant her roots. A graduate of Rice University with a degree in Art and Art History, Claire says that she spent far more time and energy working restaurant jobs during college than she ever did on her school work. She knew then that her life's calling was in the culinary field.

A graduate of the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, Claire has worked alongside many advocates of the practice of utilizing fresh, local and seasonal ingredients. Annie Sommerville of Greens and Rich Hackett ( founding chef of Oliveto) chef/owner of Enrico's Sidewalk Cafe are a couple of the people that have shaped Claire's commitment to hearty and fresh cooking resulting from highlighting food's natural intense flavors.

Since the opening of the Daily Review Cafe in November of 1994 the world of foodies, critics and gourmets have all agreed that the time has come for seasonal, fresh and inventive restaurant dining in Houston. Claire believes that life is too short and the choice of delicious ingredients too vast to commit to a set menu so she embarks on the challenge of offering a totally new and inventive menu each day. The Daily Review has received praise not only from the Houston dining public, but from national magazines such as Esquire (Best New Restaurant of 1995), Travel & Leisure (Women a the Helm), Metropolitan Home and Restaurants & Institutions and from noted food writers like John Mariani and Alison Cook.

The Daily Review is a friendly bistro-style restaurant with an outdoor dining and herb garden. The focus is on rustic Italian, French and Spanish foods gently infused with California, Asian and local flair. Breads, desserts and breakfast offerings are baked daily to compliment the changing menu. A couple of the restaurants favorites include the lamb stew which is braised with orange, sage and currants and the chicken pot pie packed full of fresh fennel, carrots and celery in a rich cream sauce.

*Claire Smith sold Daily Review Cafe in 2000 and opened Shade in Houston, TX in 2003.
