Greg Atkinson, Director of Sports, is a long time resident of Red Deer. He joined the staff of Red Deer Public Schools in 1974 and has served on the staffs of six schools. Currently, Greg is Vice Principal of Central Middle School.
Since 1976, Greg has been an official in amateur football refereeing high school, senior and bantam games. In 1988, Greg received the Harold Ferguson Award from Football Alberta for his contribution to officiating in the province. In 1994, Greg became involved with the sport of swimming with the Red Deer Marlins Swim Club. He served on the executive of the club as Fundraising Chair and Vice President. Greg also became a swim official working at swim meets in various locations around the province. For the 2002 Alberta Summer Games in Camrose, Greg was the Provincial Sport Advisor for the swimming competition.
In Red Deer middle schools, Greg has helped out various sports program serving as a coach in badminton and basketball and by officiating at basketball games. Greg enjoys participating in sports as well. He golfs in the summer and skis in the winter. Volunteering in the Alberta Teachers, Association has been an important part of Greg,s professional life. He has served the local association as Professional Development Chair and President. At the provincial level, Greg served on the Discipline ommittee for six years and most recently served as member and Chair of the Professional Conduct Appeal Committee. Greg is married to Eileen and they have an athletic daughter, Jennifer.
